Gespaltenes Kreuzberg – Deutschtürken vor dem Referendum (Doku)
"Gespaltenes Kreuzberg – Deutschtürken vor dem Referendum" is a 30-minute documentary directed by John A. Kantara and produced by ECO Media for the ARTE "Re:" reportage strand, first broadcast on 11 April 2017. Set in Berlin's Kreuzberg district in the run-up to Turkey's 16 April 2017 referendum on a presidential system, the film portrays a German-Turkish community deeply divided between supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and those organising against him. Around 1.4 million eligible Turkish voters living in Germany were entitled to cast a ballot, and the documentary captures campaign stalls, cafés, mosques and family living rooms where the political debate over Turkey's future played out on German soil. Through intimate encounters with voters, activists and community members on both sides, the film offers an observational portrait of identity, belonging and political loyalty within one of Europe's largest diaspora communities.
