Die geheimen Hoehlen der Grafen Begouen - Expedition Wissen (3sat)
"Die geheimen Höhlen der Grafen Bégouën" is a 60-minute 3sat documentary by John A. Kantara that enters one of the most carefully protected sites of prehistoric art in Europe. Hidden along the Volp river in the French Pyrenees, the caves of Tuc d'Audoubert, Les Trois-Frères and Enlène were inhabited by Stone Age people around 14,000 years ago and have been guarded for generations by the Bégouën family, who oppose any tourist use or modification. For this film, 3sat was granted rare permission to film inside the chambers – including the famous clay bison – alongside Count Robert Bégouën and the researchers working on site. The documentary combines archaeology, conservation ethics and family history to tell the story of one family's century-long stewardship of some of humanity's oldest artistic heritage, examining the fragile balance between science, tourism and preservation.
