"Fußball radikal – Ein linker Verein und seine Gegner" is a 30-minute documentary directed by John A. Kantara for ARTE's "Re:" reportage strand, first broadcast on 6 June 2017. The film focuses on SV Babelsberg 03, a Regionalliga Nordost club known throughout German football for its openly left-wing fan base, its public stance against xenophobia and homophobia, and its vocal ultras. Following chant leader and organiser René and supporters close to the Nordkurve, the documentary traces how political identity and stadium culture intertwine, and how this brings Babelsberg's supporters into repeated and sometimes violent conflict with groups around rival FC Energie Cottbus. Filmed in the run-up to a politically charged Brandenburg derby, the reportage examines fan rivalry, anti-racism, street politics and the increasingly blurred line between sport and protest in eastern Germany. It offers a close-up look at one of the most politically loaded rivalries in German non-league football.
