Unter Druck: Wasserstoff in der Mobilität | John A. Kantara

"Unter Druck: Wasserstoff in der Mobilität" is a 43-minute science documentary by John A. Kantara, produced for 3sat's "WissenHoch2" strand and first broadcast on 2 September 2021. With a hydrogen-powered Hyundai Nexo as his test vehicle, Kantara travels across Germany to ask whether green hydrogen can genuinely become a backbone of the future mobility mix, or whether it will remain an expensive promise. The film weighs the physics, infrastructure and economics of hydrogen against the rapid rise of battery-electric vehicles, and speaks to engineers, policymakers, fleet operators and researchers developing electrolyzers, fuel cells and next-generation refuelling networks. In 2021, Germany counted roughly 300,000 battery-electric cars on its roads but only around 800 hydrogen vehicles and about 100 filling stations, and the documentary argues clearly that hydrogen's real potential lies in heavy transport, long distances and industrial processes rather than the average commuter car. A sober, research-led look at a technology still searching for its market.
