Mückenalarm | Invasion der Plagegeister | John A. Kantara
"Mückenalarm – Invasion der Plagegeister" is a science documentary by John A. Kantara, produced as a ZDF/ARTE co-production with ECO Media and first broadcast in June 2015. The film investigates how climate change and global trade are enabling exotic mosquito species – carriers of tropical diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and West Nile virus – to establish themselves across Central Europe. Kantara meets biogeographer Carl Beierkuhnlein in Bayreuth, whose research documents the northward spread of vector species, and accompanies biologist Norbert Becker and his team as they combat mosquito populations along the Upper Rhine using helicopters and targeted biological agents. The documentary also enters high-security laboratories where scientists handle highly contagious viruses and explores controversial genetic research aimed at suppressing mosquito reproduction. Combining fieldwork with accessible science communication, the film offers an early look at a public-health challenge that has become more relevant with every passing year.
