"AZUBI-Mangel im Handwerk – Nachwuchs dringend gesucht!" is a 30-minute documentary by John A. Kantara produced for the ARTE "Re:" reportage strand in 2019. At a time when German craft businesses have full order books, tens of thousands of apprenticeship positions remain unfilled and small workshops fear for their future. The film follows master painter Jürgen Rudeck from Grünkraut in the Allgäu and his only apprentice Hamed Bajami, together with other tradespeople and young newcomers, to ask why the Handwerk sector – long considered a pillar of the German economy – struggles to attract a new generation. Through close personal observation, the documentary examines how demographic change, the dominance of academic career paths and shifting attitudes toward manual work are reshaping German vocational training. It offers an on-the-ground portrait of an industry at a turning point and a thoughtful look at what is at stake if the shortage of skilled craftspeople continues to widen.
