Johns Rückkehr nach Ghana - Ein Migrant sucht den Neuanfang

"Johns Rückkehr nach Ghana – Ein Migrant sucht den Neuanfang" is a 30-minute documentary directed by John A. Kantara for the ARTE "Re:" reportage series, first broadcast on 9 November 2018. The film follows John Nti, born in the Ghanaian coastal city of Tema, who sold his small clothing business to pay for his mother's funeral and travelled the Sahara and Mediterranean route to reach Hamburg in 2015. After three years in Germany without papers, regular work or a permanent home, he decided to return to Ghana with support from a Hamburg refugee organisation. Filmed on both sides of the migration journey, the documentary contrasts the hopes attached to a life in Europe with the reality of undocumented existence, and captures the quiet resilience required to start over in a country someone has already once tried to leave. The film offers a nuanced perspective on migration, return and reintegration rarely seen in European mainstream reporting.
